BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The CBTS Inc.’s board members serve on a volunteer basis without remuneration. We share a vision for reattaching the steeple to the church tower, as well as the preservation and conservation of the St. Philip’s old 1894 church.
Stephen Sharpe, St. John’s, NL. Retired business person. Life long parishioner and former Select Vestry member of St. Philip’s Anglican Parish. Born and raised in St. Philip’s. Active member in 2008/2009 of St. Philip’s Anglican Church Men’s Association. Former director Family History Society. Member Newfoundland and Labrador Historic Trust, and Heritage Canada Foundation. Founding President The Church By The Sea Heritage Group. MUN graduate: Bachelor of Commerce 1973, and Bachelor of Arts (French Major) 2007.
Winston Fiander, MUN graduate and retired executive of the Public Service of Canada where he directed corporate planning in various departments in Ottawa. Currently involved in identifying and preserving heritage assets of the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s as Chair of the town’s Heritage Committee. Active member of the Fisheries Community Alliance, an organization dedicated to rebuilding our fishery and our rural communities. Member of a MUN steering committee preparing a report on a 5 year fishery research project, led by Dr. Barbara Neis, on the west coast of Newfoundland. Has lived in the heritage area of St. Philip’s for 15 years. Owns and maintains a heritage house in Coombs Cove, Fortune Bay where he was born and raised.
Cyril Morgan: FCPA, FCGA. Born and raised in St. John’s. A resident and homeowner in St. Philip’s for over forty years. Owner of Nuport Holdings Ltd. An active Rotarian since 1971, and a recipient of a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Maria D. Squires, St. John’s, NL. Born and raised in St. Philip’s, lifetime parishioner of St. Philip’s Anglican Parish, and former member of the church choir. Worked at the Grace Hospital as personnel officer, received ICS diploma as interior designer and decorator; licensed realtor in the provinces of Alberta, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Currently a realtor with Re/Max Realty Specialists. A founding member of The Church By The Sea.
Majella Belliveau Sharpe, St. John’s, NL. Parishioner of St. Philip’s Anglican Parish; Member: Art Assoc. of NL, and Realist Artist of NL. Bilingual, and grew up in New Brunswick. After school graduation and obtaining an office diploma, she worked in the insurance, and then airline industries, and is now retired. Founding member The Church By The Sea Heritage Group.

William Lamswood, St. Philip’s, NL: Retired farmer. Life long parishioner and former Select Vestry member of St. Philip’s Anglican Parish. Over 78 years of knowledge and interest in the heritage of the St. Philip’s community. Founding member The Church By The Sea Heritage Group.
James Squires, St. Philip’s, NL: Retired business person. Life long parishioner and former Select Vestry member of St. Philip’s Anglican Parish. Past president St. Philip’s Anglican Church Men’s Association. Past president Legion Branch 10; Founding committee member The Church By The Sea Heritage Group.
Dr. Cory Thorne is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Folklore at Memorial University, and is cross-appointed with Memorial’s School of Music. Originally from Torbay, Cory is past-president of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada, and received his Ph.D. in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania, for his dissertation Come From Away: Community, Region, and Tradition in Newfoundland Expatriate Identity. His primary research includes vernacular religion, vernacular architecture, and tangible/intangible cultural heritage. Also, as vice-president of the NL Historic Trust he brings knowledge and expertise to help the situation and preservation of St. Philip’s 1894 Church.
